Haugan, Knute O., 1866-1956—Homesteading—Stillwater County (Mont.).
Group portrait of the Knute O. and Laura (Hoyem) Haugan family. Originally from the Oslo, Norway area (according to Jim Annin) or Trondheim (according to Haugan declaration on his marriage license) , Haugan, the son of Ole and Helle (Albertsdtr) Haugan, emigrated to Castle (or Robinson), Meagher County, as had many of his fellow countrymen. After working as a miner and leasing a small spread, he homesteaded on the West Rosebud in 1894. K. O. married Laura, the daughter of Lars and Margaret (Oldsdtr.) Hoyem (spelled “Hyem” on marriage license) in Castle on July 17, 1888. Haugan served as state representative, draft and ration board member, and county commissioner, as well as being a member of the Stillwater County Woolgrowers for twenty years.
